Red Hat已经签约参与Sun微系统公司的开源Java项目OpenJDK，它承诺调整自己在Linux系统上的Java开发成果。Red Hat之前启动的IcedTea项目（开源Java SE JDK开发工具）将与OpenJDK进行整合。通过参与OpenJDK项目，Red Hat最终将为Red Hat Enterprise Linux发行版开发一个兼容OpenJDK的执行工具，同时使用OpenJDK为JBoss 企业中间件创造一个优化 Linux环境的 runtime。
